The Song of Solomon

An Illuminated Version of the Ancient Hebrew Book of Love Poetry

Of all the books in the Hebrew and Christian Canon of scripture, the Song of Solomon has always held a special place in my heart.  According to scholars, King Solomon of Israel wrote this lyrical book of beautiful love poetry in honor of his Shulamite Bride.  Hebrew scholars also regarded the song as an allegory of Israel's spiritual marriage to Yahweh, their God.  Upon the advent of Christianity,  Christian scholars reinterpreted the song as a sublime allegory of the spiritual marriage between Christ and his Bride-the Church. Undoubtedly, this multidimensional song  explores the complex dynamics of amorous and spiritual love from its blissful innocence and intoxicating splendor to its  trials and woes.  Yet the song never loses its optimism concerning the beauty of love.  Even when the Shulamite Bride laments temporary separation from her beloved, she still proclaims that she is "sick with love."  After reading this lovely song, the reader is likely to agree with Solomons's bride that indeed, "many waters cannot quench love, nor will rivers overflow it."
