Romeo and Juliet

The Balcony Scene

Few poetic works have made their way into Western

consciousness as the Balcony Scene from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.   In this short dramatic scene, Shakespeare brilliantly expresses the quintessence of amorous love in all of its innocence and wonder.  Even individuals with little interest in Elizabethan Literature are familiar with the immortal words of the young Juliet, as she pines for her beloved: "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" This beautiful portrayal of young love is an enduring testimony to the ineffable dynamics young love.    It has served as the standard and definition of "true love" for many lovers and all those who long to fall in love.
